Rob Macintosh’s reasons for choosing photo- realism as a style, is quite simple. He loves attention to detail. Coming from a background of commercial art this was a style he had always admired.
Photo-realism is an extremely realistic style of painting, of which the art is based entirely on a photograph. His paintings always seem to draw the “WOW” factor. Or questions like “is this really a painting”? If one goes closer to his paintings one can see the brush strokes and sometimes even an illusion of what the photograph depicts. I have had people stand in the gallery actually arguing as to what it is. But when they go close enough they are overwhelmed with the fact that it is a painting, a photo-realistic painting, painted by ‘Rob MacIntosh the artist. they now realize what it has taken to get him to this final and completed work, dedication on his part and painstakingly hard work, no short cuts for Rob MacIntosh the artist.
His paintings take many hours and days to complete, requiring intense concentration. He sometimes paints 18 hours a day. Not because he has to but because he loves to. If you look at his paintings his paintings you will first of all think it is a photograph but on closer scrutiny you will soon realize it is a painting and then the ” WOW” factor comes to the fore again.
As a photo-realist he strives to paint as close to the photograph that he is painting from. He sometimes refers to himself as a supper realistic artist, only because that is another name of photo-realism
He started following photo-realism when he lived in America. that is where Photo=-realism was born. It emerged in the 1960s and flourished in the 1970s. he moved to the States in the 80s and discovered this amazing work by one of his favorite artists, Richard Estes .

He prefers painting his paintings on a larger canvas. the bigger the better, but that is not always possible. His photo-realistic paintings are always painted in oils with sometimes an acrylic background which he airbrushes on for a smoother effect.
I am always amazed by the intricate details that made the paintings of Rob MacIntosh so real. It is a real work of art to be able to reproduce some elements by using paints on canvas and think it is real difficult at the same time.

What is it like in a day of the life of an artist? One would think it is a very lonely life. But not really an artist that concentrates on what he is doing is in his own little world. Loving what he is doing makes all the difference. the music is playing and the mind gets right into the painting. they live a life of what we can only dream about. Relaxing and enjoying every stroke they paint.
I have lived with an artist for the past 40 years. One learns to give them their space and not to disturb them. Rob Macintosh is one of those artists that does very fine work. His concentration at times is so intense that any noise can change a brush stroke.
I have often been asked what kind of moods does the artist have?. I think every artist is different. Rob is a very quiet man he enjoys his lone time and lives in the painting he is creating. People ask me do you sit with him when he paints?. No not at all. It is like when someone works on the computer and has someone standing behind them it is irritating, so no I do not sit with him when he works. I do go and see how the progress comes along. I give him the input he likes to hear . Often I give him some criticism he does not like to hear but takes it in his stride and has another look to see if I could be right. That is why he says I am his best critique.

Rob MacIntosh is currently painting a serious of paintings for a client that lives in Stellenbosh. the project consist of 26 paintings and
.
all paintings are in oil on canvas . the images are all about Gordon’s bay a seaside resort near Somerset West. Being a photo realist these paintings give one the feeling they are like photo’s but close up one can see they are all an illusion of the the real picture. Rob has strived many years to perfect his technique. It takes him many hours to do one small piece of the painting. No short cuts and many layers one on top of each other.
